I talk about the end of the pastoral search process and the direction this podcast and blog are going in. The music is from Cagey House, Tuesday Was A Swan. I'm sorry about the unfortunate hum. I will try a different microphone next time to begin troubleshooting the problem.
This is a transcript of my #0 Pre Podcastpodcast. It sounds better than it reads. Trust me on this or, listen for yourself.
Part 1
Hi everyone! revmerrillsnotebook, Item Zero", yes, that's right, zero. This actually isn't the first podcast; it is sort of a pre-podcast.
I'm in a bit of transition here. I haven't read the book that I will be reviewing. So I thought, so that this feed would have something in it, I would put the last podcast of my "revmerrill's podcast" here. That way if you came over from that podcast, and I hope that people who were subscribed there are now subscribed here, if you are thank you very much, that they would know they had come to the right place. And if you are just arriving here, you know that you have come to the right place, because I talk about the upcoming events for revmerrillsnotebook.
That's basically all I wanted to say today, just, I wanted something here so I knew the feed was working and so that you would know the feed is working.
So I hope that I will get my homework done soon, and that the first review will be up. Thank you very much.
Part 2
Hello, this is revmerrill's podcast for Sunday, April 22, 2007. I'd like to share some news with you. I have decided to suspend "revmerrill's Podcast". That doesn't mean I will stop podcasting or that you need to stop listening. I am simply changing a number of things. And I thought the best way to do that was to stop this podcast and start another. In fact, I will be essentially simulcasting this podcast with my new venture.
Here's the plan: I will suspend my payments to libsyn, where I have hosted this podcast for the past sixteen months, I guess it has been. I will move all the files. I'm in the process of doing that now and I need to do that by April 30th. I will move all the files to Archive.org. If there is anything you want to listen to again, search for "pmlpodcast", and you will find all the old files.
Now, how to go about getting the new stuff. Well there are a couple of ways to keep up with this. The simplest way is to subscribe to the feed Feeds.Feedburner.com/revmerrillsnotebook.
If you are not into subscribing to a feed, and I hope you are, you can go to the site revmerrill.Vox.com, and that is where the show notes will be and anything else I have to say.
If all this disappears out of your brain, go to Google Groups and there is a group called revmerrill there. You can ask to be added to the group and you will provide your email address, and I will send out an email, now and again, not very often, because I don't like my inbox cluttered up and I'm sure you don't either, so that you can hear of new projects or be reminded of what is going on the new podcast, revmerrillsnotebook.
revmerrillsnotebook will, at least initially, deal with reviews of books. I have two books in mind that I will be reading and reviewing. You see, it gets me reading, there is a method in the madness here.
One is that I'd like to read Kurt Vonnegut's book "God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian," a 78-page book, so that should be manageable.
And I am going to be reading another book, which I believe, is called "Jesus' Family Tomb". It is a book based on some archaeological research in Israel, where an ossuary, which is a bone box, was discovered bearing the inscription: "Jesus, son of Joseph."
I have been listening to a podcast from Australia Broadcast Company. The podcast is The Ark. Rachel Conn has been interviewing one of the authors of the book, and the filmmaker, he does television work. What is the title of his show? I think it's called "Naked Archeology". He claims this is the burial tomb for Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and others. So I thought those might be two interesting books to start this series off with.
This will mean that I have to be intentional about my spiritual reading. And invite you to be intentional about yours. It also may mean that the podcast will not be weekly, but will be as I finish the books, so I will have the pressure on me to keep this podcast going, which is something that I am determined to do. It is one of the struggles I had with the other podcast.
So that's the news from here on an absolutely glorious, glorious day.
I made the spiritual and health-related decision today, after having stopped off for a light lunch with friends after church, I was several blocks downhill of my apartment, and I said to them, "If it is OK with you, if you don't feel I'm being rude, I think I'm going to walk home." They said, "Well that's great. Walk off that lunch." And I said, "You bet."
I walked the, oh, four blocks, three of which were straight uphill and one of which is, well, it's actually more than a block. It doesn't happen to be a road, it happens to be a waterway, and the road and sidewalk go over, which would probably be a block. So I decided to walk from Harrison Street, up the hill, across First, across Second, down Second to Pine, and up here to Third. It was uphill and it was work, but it was glorious and it was worth it.
So I hope your spiritual journey is a good one right now. I will talk to you soon, promise. Put that feed in, stay in touch, and blessings on your day.
I have established a group on google. Demonstrating no imagination at all, I named it revmerrill. You can check this web site whenever the mood strikes you or you can request that you be added to the group so that you can receive notifications by email. You can:
and I will send you an invitation.
I know sometimes I get behind in listening to podcasts or reading blogs and a friendly email would alert me to an episode or series I would like to listen to or read in a timely manner. I figure you are like me at times in this way.
Podcasts change. Blogs change. I am hoping the group will provide some needed stability and let you learn about short-term podcasts and help us stay connected.
I've read a number of books on and listened to a variety of podcasts about podcasting. One of the items mentioned sounds simple enough: What is your podcast about? For personal experience, I can tell you that this is a very important question. I didn't know what my podcast was about and so I've been having trouble maintaining a regular schedule and flow.
On the other hand, I have really enjoyed the short-term podcasts I have done. They've been exhausting. Yet, even though I look forward to being free of the pressure, I usually start planning the next one before the current one is done. I'm even working on turning one of them into a book!
As a result, I have decided to terminate my current podcast and start a new one here focused on spiritual reading. This will be good for me, too, since it means I have to keep up on my own reading which has flagged of late.
I hope to have a podcast posted soon so stay tuned!
